GTA 6 is out in three weeks, but the box in the shop has no disc. Does it matter if you don't really own your games?
Why it hits youMillions of people will buy GTA 6, and many of them would normally trade in or sell a £70 game when they've finished it. A code that locks the game to your account ends that. It's also a test of a bigger question for anyone who buys games, films or music online: when you pay, are you buying something or just renting access?
Grand Theft Auto VI launches on PS5 and Xbox on 19 November for £69.99. If you buy it in a shop, you'll get a box with a download code inside, not a disc. Collectors and some shops say that means you can't lend, sell or trade it in. Rockstar says the box lets you download the game early so it's ready on day one.

Players and shops who want discs
A box with nothing in it
Critics say a box with only a code in it isn't really a physical copy. Once you redeem the code, the game is tied to your PlayStation or Xbox account, so you can't sell it, lend it or trade it in, and if your account is ever banned you lose it. Two shops in North America refused to stock it. Loot Box Gaming said a product that can't “honor the people who pay their hard earned money” isn't one it will sell. Video Games Plus said it would happily stock a version with a disc if one ever comes out.

Rockstar and the case for codes
Built for day one
Rockstar says boxed copies go on sale on 12 November, a week early, so players can pre-load the game and play the moment it unlocks. The download is reported to be about 210GB on PS5, nearly a third of the console's storage, so most people would have had a big download even with a disc. Industry reporters say a code also cuts the risk of copies leaking early, something that has dogged GTA 6 for years. Demand doesn't seem hit: boxed copies sold out at Amazon at one point, and most players already buy digitally.

What the law says
You buy a licence, not the game
When MPs debated digital ownership in November 2025, after a petition by the Stop Killing Games campaign, the government said games have always been licensed to players, not sold outright. It refused to change consumer law, but said companies must make clear what you're paying for: “UK law is very clear: it requires information to consumers to be clear and correct.” Rockstar has said plainly that the box won't contain a disc, so on that test it has told buyers.

The Blindspot · what the headlines skip
Critics skip how most people already buy games
The anger comes mostly from collectors. But most players already download their games, and boxed copies still sold out at one point. For many buyers, the box is just a way to pay in a shop or get a slightly cheaper deal.

Supporters skip who loses the most: people on a budget
Trading in or selling games second-hand is how a lot of younger players afford new ones. A code ends that for GTA 6, and makes it harder to pass the game on to a sibling or friend. That cost falls hardest on people who can't easily spend £70.

A disc wouldn't have meant full ownership either
Even games sold on disc are licences, and big games often need huge downloads and updates to play. The real argument is about resale and lending, not whether a piece of plastic is in the box.
